Avon Tyres backs vital work of Midland Freewheelers

Avon Tyres is backing the vital work carried out by the Midland Freewheelers, a voluntary organisation that delivers urgent medical documents as well as desperately-needed blood to hospitals around the West Midlands.
Midland Freewheelers is a charitable organisation, comprising motorcyclists who offer a free emergency ‘out-of-hours’ courier service for NHS hospitals and trusts in the West Midlands area. Operating from New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, Midland Freewheelers uses local motorcyclists – all volunteers – who all hold advanced riding qualifications, with either RoSPA or the IAM.
In its first two years of operations, it carried out around 1,300 urgent deliveries for New Cross Hospital and travelled almost 30,000 miles. It is hoped that this service can be expanded to cover other hospitals in the area.
Darrell Shaw from Midland Freewheelers, explains, “As a charity, we rely on local individuals or companies to support us. We deliver blood products, x-rays, medical documents – basically anything we can fit on a bike. From New Cross, we collect and then deliver items as required and we can do any distances; we’ve been as far as Newcastle-under-Lyme, so mainly we do a 100-mile radius. Some days, it can be a lovely ride out, but at 10 pm at night, when it’s cold and wet, it is a little bit different – but we have to get the job done.”
Helping ‘get the job done’ are the machines used by Midland Freewheelers – a 2002 Honda Pan European with more than 100,000 miles on the clock and a 1999 Honda Deauville. To show its support to these dedicated volunteers, Avon Tyres has supplied a set of its sports-touring Storm 2 Ultras to be used on the Deauville.
Shaw says, “Thanks to Avon’s generosity, it means we can spend the money on fuel to get us to our next job. I’ve done up to 37 jobs a day for Midland Freewheelers and we never underestimate the importance of what we do. What we carry could potentially save someone’s life.”
