Avon Tyres is sponsoring an exciting new Irish race series, the Formula 1 Era Superbike championship, which kicks off this month.
The championship will be called the Avon Tyres Formula 1 Era SBK Series and will be a six-event championship beginning at Nutts Corner Circuit on April 20 and ending in September at Bishopscourt Racing Circuit – both in Ireland.
Bikes featured are the classic superbikes of the 1980s and 1990s, such as the Honda RC30 and RC45, Yamaha’s YZF750 and OW-01, Kawasaki’s ZXR750 and ZX-7R, the Aprilia RSV1000 Mille as well as Ducati’s 916 and 996 family. These machines represent the ‘golden era’ of modern superbike racing, thanks to the lack of electronics and rider aids. This means that the riders really make the difference, promoting close, cost-effective racing.
To help promote this exciting, affordable racing, Avon Tyres has joined with the organisers of the championship as title sponsor and pledged its 3D Ultra Xtreme tyres to top point-scorers.
Series organiser, John McAllister, says, “Modern superbikes have become so expensive to race competitively; unless you can afford the latest missile with all the latest electronics, you can’t expect to get anywhere near the front guys. Towards the end of 2011, I decided to do what I could to bring back the Superbikes of the 1990s, when no electronics were used and it was all down to rider talent. Riders like Joey and Robert Dunlop, Carl Fogarty, Steve Hislop and Philip McCallen all entertained us on some amazing machines. I did a poll in early 2012 to gauge opinion and the results were very positive, so we drafted a set of technical regulations.”
Avon Tyres was proud to come on board as title sponsor when plans of the new series were released. McAllister adds, “We were delighted to welcome on board Avon Motorcycle Tyres as title sponsor for 2013. It has pledged to supply its excellent 3D Ultra Xtreme tyres to the top point-scorers as well as a beautiful end-of-season, engraved perpetual trophy for the series champion.”
The Avon Tyres Formula 1 Era SBK series calendar takes in six events and 13 rounds.
Rounds 1 and 2, April 20 Nutts Corner
Rounds 3, 4 and 5, May 25-26 at Mondello Park (to be confirmed)
Rounds 6 and 7, June 1 at Kirkistown
Rounds 8 and 9, July 20 at Bishopscourt
Rounds 10 and 11, Sept 7 at Kirkistown
Rounds 12 and 13, Sept 21 at Bishopscourt
Gary Bretherton, UK Sales Manager for Avon Motorcycle Tyres, says, “Avon Tyres is proud to back the Formula 1 Era Superbike championship. It epitomises what exciting racing is all about: men and machines fighting it out fairly on the track without all the modern – and expensive – rider aids and electronics. We are looking forward to some close racing and will be delighted to crown the overall champion at Bishopscourt in September.”
