Another action-packed season for Avon Tyres Motorsport draws to a close with the third running of the Gulf 12 Hours in December and Avon has once again been selected as sole tyre supplier to the popular endurance race.
Beginning back in January 2012, with a second running of the event in December of the same year, the Gulf 12 Hours has established itself as an instant classic in the sportscar racing arena, with an eclectic mix of GT3, GT4, Porsche Cup and CN2 prototype cars.
For 2013, the two-part endurance race will see Italian racing powerhouse, AF Corse, aiming to maintain its record as the only winner of the Abu Dhabi event, while the Bentley Continental GT3 will make its much-awaited competitive debut at the Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit.
Bentley’s first racing car since the 2003 Le Mans 24 Hours-winning Bentley Speed 8, the Continental GT3, which made its public debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed, will be run by M-Sport Bentley at the Emirati event.
The GT3 class boasts an exciting field for the December meeting, with teams from all over the world entering the prestigious event. Joining the Bentley Continental GT3 will be the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Porsche 997 GT3 R, the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Audi R8 LMS.
Of the 22 GT3 entries confirmed so far, back-to-back winners AF Corse, along with Team Kessel Racing, will be the most represented with four entries each from the Italian and Swiss outfits.
Avon Tyres Motorsport Manager, Paul Coates, is pleased to see interest in the Gulf 12 Hours continue to increase, “Avon has been involved with the Gulf 12 Hours from the outset – it’s a fantastic event that boasts great racing and glamour in an area where motorsport is becoming increasingly popular. The fact that the Bentley Continental GT3 is set to make its competitive debut there is further evidence of what prestige the event carries.
“Our endurance racing pedigree speaks for itself – we’re involved in GT racing across Europe, most notably in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship and to be represented further afield just goes to reinforce our position in the market.”
The Gulf 12 Hours follows a special two-part format, with competitors fighting it out for victory over two six-hour races. It’s the final six hours under the floodlights of the iconic Yas Marina which truly encapsulates the real excitement of the endurance thriller.
Action for the Gulf 12 Hours begins on Wednesday, December 11th, with qualifying following on the Thursday. Race action begins on Friday morning at 0930 local time, with the first of the two six-hour races.
