Avon Tyres will become sole tyre supplier to the French Rallycross Championship after agreeing to a three-year deal with organisers the AFOR and the Fédération Française du Sport Automobile (FFSA).
The agreement will see Avon’s French distributor, Sodipneu, supply tyres to the Supercar and Super 1600 classes, as well as the French Rallycross Cup and the Twingo R1 Rallycross Cup.
The top two French Rallycross categories welcome the same machinery as the European Rallycross Championship – a series in which Avon has dominated, supplying tyres to champions for the past 20 years. The Supercar class features 490bhp World Rally Championship-style four-wheel-drive cars, while the Super1600 class is open to 216bhp two-wheel-drive machinery. Both classes will use Avon-branded ACB11 tyres from this season.
New to the championship is the single-make 131-138bhp Twingo Cup, which replaces the Logan Cup for 2013. All models in this ultra-cost-effective class will use Avon ZZR tyres for the next three years.
Paul Coates, General Manager of Avon Tyres Motorsport, underlined the importance of rallycross in France, saying, “Rallycross is a sport which is really growing in stature and the extra divisions in French Rallycross make the championship more accessible, which can only be a good thing for the sport and for Avon.
“France is a key market for us and it has a wonderful, rich history in rallycross, so we’re very pleased to become sole supplier for the next three years.”
The French Rallycross Championship is a well-established national championship. The first French Rallycross race was held at the revered Lohéac circuit in 1976, with the full French Rallycross Championship being established the following year.
Essay, in Normandy, plays host to the season opener of the 10-round French Rallycross Championship, which begins on May 18.
