Avon has been developing motorcycle tyres for more than a century and is proud to announce the new TrailRider adventure sport touring tyre – Avon's most advanced tyre yet.
In the past, for many tyre manufacturers, the 'large trailbike' tyre wasn't perhaps a big priority. The market in many countries was more focused on sportsbikes, tourers, and naked bikes, with 600cc+ dirt-styled bikes a fairly niche sector.
But over the past decade, that has changed enormously. Now, bikes like the BMW R1200 GS and Triumph Adventure are amongst the best sellers in many markets.
And the riders of these large-capacity, touring-adventure bikes have been demanding more and more from their tyres. They need extreme mileage – for crossing countries and continents, in pursuit of their dreams. They need stability and strength for two-up touring, with luggage and heavy fuel loads. They need grip – in all weather conditions, and on all surfaces, from gravel firebreak roads to unlimited-speed Autobahns. And they need all this in a tyre that is available in a wide range of suitable sizes, with a tread pattern that looks right on their machines.
In many ways, this is a much harder job than something like a supersport tyre – which has a far narrower area of operating parameters. So, Avon has spent the last two years working flat-out on the new TrailRider, starting off with the very latest in carcass construction technology, using an Advanced Variable Belt to give stiffness and flex in the right areas.
Then the Melksham-based manufacturer added a zero-degree jointless steel belt around the tyre circumference. On top of that goes Avon's latest tri-compound tread, with a softer compound on the tread edge, for more grip, a harder centre compound for mileage, and under the surface tread is a low-hysteresis bonding compound. The tread compounds themselves are very high in silica, for superb wet weather performance.
Finally, the TrailRider wears an all-new computer-developed tread pattern, with 3D Sipe technology and Enhanced Aqua Flow grooves, to clear water faster. Avon's acclaimed 3D Sipes use clever interlocking 'teeth' inside the tread slits, to fine-tune the tread flex, improving warm-up times, while stabilising the tread blocks under load. This gives more stability, higher grip, and longer life.
Avon's motorcycle design engineer, Ashley Vowles, has been speaking about the new tyres: "We've designed the TrailRider carcass construction to deliver improved grip and handling. Our chemists have come up with a new super-rich silica compound, using the latest compounding technology to enhance wet grip without affecting mileage. We've also used a multi-compound tread on the rear radial models, giving softer tread on the edge for better grip, and a harder compound in the centre of the tyre for better mileage.
Avon's new TrailRider is available now, and in a huge range of sizes – six fronts and twelve rears – in radial and bias ply constructions. It's aimed at middleweight and large-capacity adventure sport bikes, including the BMW GS range, Suzuki's V-Strom 650 and 1000, Yamaha's Super Tenere, KTM's Adventure and the Triumph Tiger 800 and Explorer.
