Nick Tandy and David Ashburn held off a late challenge in Sunday’s second race at Snetterton this weekend, to become the first GT3-class repeat winners in the 2013 Avon Tyres British GT Championship.
Tandy and Ashburn previously took the spoils in the second race of the Oulton Park doubleheader over Easter weekend, in a convincing showing for the Trackspeed pairing.
Two retirements then followed at Rockingham and Silverstone and a late engine issue in race one at Snetterton looked to spell further bad luck for the duo, but the pro-am pairing fought back hard in the final race of the weekend to take the top step of the podium once again.
Tandy began the race from fifth on the grid in his #31 Trackspeed Porsche 997 GT3-R. A fantastic start for the Bedford star saw the 28-year-old move up to third by the end of lap three and second just one lap later.
With the leading Optimum Motorsports BMW Z4 of Joe Osborne well within his sights, Tandy slashed the gap at the front from 2.3 seconds on lap four to just nine tenths of a second on lap six, after breaking the circuit lap record.
The following lap, the leading pair made contact with Osborne spinning and Tandy assuming first place. Tandy did the gentlemanly thing, allowing Osborne to take back the lead, before retaking it just a handful of laps later.
Once out front, Tandy soon built himself an impressive lead ahead of the pack. His cushion was such that, when Tandy pitted to hand over to team-mate, David Ashburn, Ashburn was able to retake to the track in the lead ahead of the unrelated Steve Tandy.
Ashburn raced hard to the end, fending off a strong challenge from Steve Tandy and the chasing pack in the final stages of the race, to take the second win of the year for the Trackspeed duo by just under half a second.
There is now a summer break in the Avon Tyres British GT calendar, with the next race of the season taking place at Brands Hatch circuit in Kent over the weekend of August 10/11.
The Avon Tyres British GT Championship is the UK’s foremost endurance racing series and is an integral part of the Avon Tyres Motorsport programme.
